Strategies to Engage and Retain Professional Drivers
Introduction
Truck drivers are one of the most valuable assets in your company. They keep your business running and make sure that you get paid on time. However, it’s important to acknowledge that as a driver gets older, they’re more likely to want to retire or take on a less stressful job with less hours. This means you’ll need to find ways of keeping these talented professionals engaged and interested in working for your organization long term. Here are some strategies I’ve learned over my years of working with truck drivers:
Paying drivers more.
One of the best ways to engage and retain drivers is to pay them more. Drivers are more likely to stay with a company if they are paid well, on time, and fairly. Paying drivers more can be done by increasing the base wage or offering incentives such as signing bonuses, referral bonuses or other recognition programs. Since drivers are working for companies that employ them (such as Uber and Lyft), it’s important for these companies to pay their employees well so that they can continue running their businesses successfully!
Providing benefits for your drivers.
- Provide benefits for your drivers, such as health and dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance and disability insurance.
- Offer a 401(k) plan with matching contributions.
- Offer unemployment insurance.
- Provide paid vacation days, holidays and sick days (including personal days) to employees who are not on call 24/7.
- Give new parents paid parental leave of up to 12 weeks at 100 percent of their wages or more if the company’s policy allows it; give adoptive parents up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act).
Hiring a dedicated driver manager.
It is important that you have a dedicated driver manager for your company, someone who is in constant contact with drivers and can communicate effectively with both management and customers.
The driver manager should be able to identify concerns from the drivers, relay them to management, and work through those issues together. The driver manager should also be able to handle requests from customers in real time. If a customer calls looking for a specific truck or driver, they want it now—and they want it done right away!
Using an effective driver management system.
A driver management system is a great way to keep track of your drivers and their progress. The data you can collect will help you find out where they are, what they are doing, what they need, and what they like. This information can help you improve the quality of their experience as well as make sure that they are always safe while on the road.
Recruiting from within your company.
If you are looking to recruit drivers, it is important to look for those who already have a good relationship with your company. Drivers who have been with the company for a long time, or those that have an excellent driving record and are familiar with their dispatcher are more likely to be able to perform well during the contract period. In addition, if a driver has worked with other team members before then they will know how to work together as part of a cohesive whole.
Being transparent with your drivers.
The first step is to define what transparency means to you. For example, do you want the driver to be able to see where they are on the map? Do you want them to be able to see their current location on a traffic-enabled map without having to pull over and look at the phone in their bag or pocket? Or do you simply want them on-demand information about hazards or police activity along their route that might affect their arrival time?
The second step is understanding what your drivers value as far as being transparent with them. They may not care if they can see where they are on a map; they may just want better quality navigation information (including voice prompts) so that they can focus on driving safely rather than looking at maps while driving.
These 3 strategies can help keep you from losing your best truckers
Here are some strategies that can help you retain your best drivers:
- Pay them more. Many drivers are looking for a raise, and if you don’t offer it, they will go elsewhere.
- Provide benefits for them and their families. This shows that you care about more than just the bottom line—it also helps to build loyalty and engagement among your best employees who might otherwise be tempted by other companies offering better pay or benefits packages (or both). If even one driver leaves due to these issues, imagine how much time it would take to find, hire, train and integrate an entirely new person into the team? Not only would this cause problems with productivity but it could also have an impact on safety as well as cost per mile (CPM). The cost of replacing an employee is rarely considered when making decisions about benefit programs; however, if there were ever a time where CPM mattered more than ever before then this would certainly be it!
- Hire dedicated driver managers who understand what makes truckers tick so they can provide leadership that keeps drivers happy at work while encouraging them towards success here too.”
Conclusion
As you can see, there are many ways to keep your drivers happy. By implementing these strategies, you’ll be able to retain the best workers and keep them on board for years to come.
